To the Muslim Woman Who Sat During Our National Anthem

I've read waves of backlash from a photo of a Muslim woman who chose to sit during our national anthem. Here's a letter to that woman suggesting a different response from Americans:
To Whom This Concerns:
I'm not sure if it was intentional, but if it weren't for this cruelly taken photo, no one would know about this. Your actions have upset many because you're publicly disrespecting America. Was it your ambition to set a fire among Americans? Are you disabled so that you couldn't stand? Is it against your particular practice to honor America? I'm not asking facetiously, but would truly like to know. I'm not sure if it is right or wrong, but if I were in your shoes, I can't say what I would've done. But, on behalf of that man and on behalf of Americans who are fueling hate and criticism, I offer an alternative response.
First, I ask your forgiveness. Forgiveness for the man who took this photo, forgiveness for his crooked heart sowing division and hate. Those who fuel such fires do so from fear and ignorance. Forgive them because they truly don't know what they're doing.
Second, I'm thankful. Here, you have found freedom to sit during the anthem, for that is your right. I'm glad we have our rights to oppose authority and government, and even anthems, so long as it causes no harm to others. Thank you for reminding me why people come here in the first place. Our country has relieved victims of oppressive nations so they can exercise such freedoms without fear of punishment or death. So I ask once again for forgiveness for oppressing you. No one in this nation has a right to do so. That is not why our loved ones have and are fighting and dying. In a way, by choosing not to partake in our anthem you have honored those who have fought for your right to do so. They battled so we can all coexist no matter our religions or politics. To me, that is what makes America beautiful.
Lastly, please know no matter how alone, misunderstood and hated you feel - there are Americans who accept you. We're sorry for keeping so quiet. Please know I'm not afraid to look you in the eye and smile. Please know I'm not judging you even if you did this for your religion. Even if you did this to oppose America deliberately. I will love you because that is what I am obligated to do. I will respect you because you are my equal. No matter the reason for your actions, you were probably there for the same reason as anyone: to enjoy a game, and I respect that, too.
